Teachers target Jindal, lawmakers with recalls

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 14
–>

To force the recall elections would require signatures from one-third of registered voters in the official’s district within 180 days. Four previous recall efforts against Jindal have failed since 2008. The teachers won’t say how many signatures they’re received so far, but claim they’ve been bombarded with requests for copies of the petitions.

Targeted lawmakers include Kleckley and St. Tammany Parish Reps. Kevin Pearson and Greg Cromer, all Republicans. A new recall petition was filed Friday against freshman Rep. Ray Garofalo, R-Chalmette, but the Secretary of State’s Office rejected the filing, saying the paperwork was incorrect.

Kleckley, R-Lake Charles, said he has no concerns about the recall elections. He said he and his colleagues represent their districts well and won’t be ousted.

“The people in my district will look at my success as a public servant over the last several years and measure me on my successes and the good things that I’ve done for the district and the positive things I’ve done for the area, and they won’t measure me on just one single issue,” he said.

Recall leaders say the lawmakers haven’t listened to their own constituents and were arrogant in their responses to educators’ concerns about the changes.

“We trust them to make good laws, and they did not,” Bonvillain said.

The teachers are promoting the recalls on Facebook and websites, they’ve established a hotline and they’ve held signature drives in several parishes. They’re printed t-shirts and bumper stickers. In Kleckley’s district, they’re walking neighborhoods, seeking signatures and putting up yard signs.

“We’re organized. We’re doing our best to reach as many people as we can,” said Lee Barrios, a retired teacher from Abita Springs who is working on the recalls.

Jason Dore, executive director of the state Republican Party, claims the state’s teacher unions are behind the petition efforts. But the teachers in charge say they started on their own and while they’ve gotten support from union leaders, they haven’t received union money for the recall efforts.

The Republican Party of Louisiana filed complaints against the Jindal and Kleckley recall efforts with the state ethics board, accusing the teachers of not filing the proper campaign-finance documents disclosing who is paying for the advertising, yard signs and other materials being distributed.

“We will not stand idly by while union leaders and their allies abuse the recall process for political purposes by attacking those who supported reforming Louisiana’s broken public education system,” Dore said in a statement.

Bonvillain said the teachers group has talked to the state ethics office and been told financial reports are due in July.

She said the group will file on time, and she accused Dore of attacking the recall efforts because they’re gaining momentum.

“This is like Goliath complaining that David has a sling shot,” Bonvillain said.

Sandusky convicted of abuse

BELLEFONTE, Pa. — Jerry Sandusky was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years, accusations that shattered the Happy Valley image of Penn State football and led to the firing of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.

Sandusky, 68, a retired defensive coach who was once Paterno’s heir apparent, was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts.

Sandusky showed little emotion as the verdict was read. The judge ordered him to be taken to the county jail to await sentencing in about three months. Many of the charges carry mandatory minimum sentences, and Sandusky is certain to spend the rest of his life in prison.

The judge revoked Sandusky’s bail and ordered him jailed. In court, Sandusky half-waved toward family as the sheriff led him away. Outside, he calmly walked to a sheriff’s car with his hands cuffed in front of him.

The accuser known in court papers as Victim 6 broke down in tears upon hearing the verdicts in the courtroom. Afterward, a prosecutor embraced him and said, “Did I ever lie to you?”

The man, now 25, testified that Sandusky called himself the “tickle monster” in a shower assault. He declined to comment to a reporter afterward.

His mother said: “Nobody wins. We’ve all lost.”

Almost immediately after the judge adjourned, loud cheers could be heard from a couple hundred people gathered outside the courthouse as word quickly spread that Sandusky had been convicted.

The crowd included victim advocates and local residents with their kids. Many held up their smartphones to take pictures as people filtered out of the building.

As Sandusky was placed in the cruiser to be taken to jail, someone yelled at him to “rot in hell.” Others hurled insults, and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on courthouse steps when he said, “The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence.”

Eight young men testified in a central Pennsylvania courtroom about a range of abuse, from kissing and massages to groping, oral sex and anal rape.

The propagandize serves some-more than 200 of Escambia’s 7,000 students with disabilities. And a multisensory formidable — finished in 2005 — is a largest of a kind in a world.

It is formed on a Snoezelen concept, grown in a Netherlands some-more than 30 years ago. A Snoezelen sourroundings uses colors, lights, textures and song to bleed responses from people with disabilities.

Upon entering a atrium, visitors are greeted by relaxing music, plants and wink lights. When we travel into a Jungle Room, we immediately feel that a carpeted building is textured.

There are swings and a set of stairs that lead adult to a overhanging overpass in artificial, though realistic-looking trees.

There are moving “bubble tubes” and fiber ocular strands for children to demeanour during and touch, as good as a “ball bath” with shimmering cosmetic balls.

Soothing aromas such as lavender can be pumped into a room, and a power of a vibrations on a burble tubes can be changed.

RESPECT: What it means to education

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 10
–>

According to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, a idea of a $5 billion White House plan, RESPECT, is to “elevate a standing of teachers in a United States.” But will a new preparation beginning suffer a same recognition as Aretha Franklin’s famous song? Will it make training “not usually America’s many critical contention – though also America’s many reputable profession”?

While a acronym that stands for Recognizing Educational Success, Professional Excellence and Collaborative Teaching is inspirational, a republic seems regrettably so distant from embracing a contention that a charge might be as tough to suppose as winning as a difference are to remember.

Yet suppose we should because, philosophically, a new beginning has so many good points: creation admissions to college training programs some-more selective; restraining compensate to opening rather than only experience; evaluating teachers by a operation of measures, not only exam scores; and creation clergyman salaries some-more rival with other professions.

Unfortunately, even with a boat headed in such a clever direction, we also suppose satisfactory seas and following winds could be sad thinking. We need a sea change, though are we unequivocally prepared to dedicate resources and advocacy to rouse a venerate teachers suffer in this nation to compare that that other countries reason a contention and a value they put on tyro achievement? States will contest for a initiative’s funding, that is requested in a 2013 budget, so we shall see.

The administration’s new pull is a domestic respond to a news released final year patrician “What a U.S. Can Learn From a World’s Most Successful Education Reform Efforts.” It compared a U.S. preparation complement to those of a highest-performing countries as ranked by a Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA. Finland, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Canada were among a nations whose students swell over ours, generally in math.

The report’s tip idea was to “make a accordant bid to lift a standing of a training profession.” One aspect of that is pay. Compared to other high-achieving countries, U.S. teachers are not underpaid. However, they are when compared to American college graduates with identical levels of educational training who enter other professions. Their salaries are 40 percent lower. Teachers are underpaid in other countries, though not scarcely to this extent. That’s a magnitude of relations levels of respect.

So reconfiguring a American preparation complement depends heavily on instilling honour toward a profession. The opening is heated in a United States, where some voices for remodel take an repugnant perspective of teachers, propagandize boards, associations and even, during times, children.

One indicate of a news stands out in that context: Culturally anomalous countries have succeeded not simply by changing how teachers are trained, upheld and paid, though by fostering a really opposite opinion about preparation and educators. Education appears to have a high standing in these countries, a news argues, “because a open during vast has accepted that a nation contingency live by the tellurian capital.”
