Saving Northampton teaching jobs
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Parents in Northampton are trying to find ways to save two dozen jobs in the city school system.
Northampton is currently looking to fill a $2.4 million budget gap . Some city officials believe a solution would be to cut the jobs of 24 teachers–that’s because the city spends about 60% of its general budget on its schools.
But there are some parents who are upset over this proposal. An estimated 150 people gathered at JFK Middle School in Florence Tuesday night, to show their support for the teachers, at a public job forum.
Pamela Schwartz of ” YES! Northampton” told 22News last week’s Northampton School Committee budget fails to fund 24 positions.
“The most fundamental: music, art in the high school. language teachers in JFK. Elementary School teachers on that level. They are cuts we cannot accept,” Schwartz said.
Schwartz told 22News the group supports creative tax legislation, and that they favor the governor’s tax proposal to fund education and transportation. She also added that they support the “Act to Invest in Our Communities”, which is a bill co-sponsored by Northampton State Representative Peter Kocot. Kocot was part of the panel for Tuesday night’s meeting.
The next public budget meeting will be held 7PM, Wednesday night inside the Little Theatre at Northampton High School.

Boise State education module educates, inspires, expands
A revisit to Boise State Universitys preparation academy for facile students banishes anyones old-school ideas about what competence go on in such a program. Rote memorization, foe between students and standardised tests are not partial of a design here.
Students are some-more expected to be behaving a play they wrote about zoo animals than reading about them in a textbook.
They learn concepts such as a disproportion between left and right, though they do so by a Simon Says-like diversion that integrates earthy movement, quick meditative and fun.
The academy helps kids learn to adore reading as most as it teaches them a simple skills, pronounced Debbie Shorthouse.
Shes a mom of Hannah, a second-grader whos attended a academy a past dual years.
Its that thought that a book can take we anywhere that a book is a journey, pronounced Shorthouse. They learn all of that.
A MODEST BEGINNING
When Boise State began a reading and essay academy for 30 elementary-age children in 2007, it was exclusively a summer offering. Professors wanted to emanate a place for preparation students to do their classroom margin work.
But we found there was a niche and a need in a open propagandize complement for this kind of program. Word spread, pronounced Anne Gregory, a highbrow in BSUs Department of Literacy who co-founded a module with highbrow Mary Ann Cahill.
The module has grown usually given a initial year, and a university began charity it on a year-round basement in 2012.
Registration for a new session, that starts Jan. 19 and continues on Saturday mornings by April, is now open.
LOOKING FORWARD TO SATURDAYS
Heres what we know, pronounced Shannon Nicholson, a third-grade clergyman during Meridians Pepper Ridge Elementary who also helps in a BSU program. Kids who onslaught with reading and essay have a harder time throwing adult a comparison they get. The opening gets incomparable if they dont get assistance even with math. They have to review story problems.
One of Nicholsons favorite projects: Having her immature students during BSU select an animal, investigate it, afterwards write and illustrate their possess books. Nicholson sent a books to be firm in tough cover for students to keep.
Julie Seinigers daughter, 10-year-old Tessa, has been enrolled in a module given it began. Its opposite from sitting in a classroom, pronounced Seiniger.
Typical activities embody a margin outing to a zoo or a library, followed by essay or storytelling formed on what kids saw on their trip.
Seiniger adopted her daughter from China when Tessa was 18 months old. Tessa grew adult conference and training to pronounce Mandarin. Some students with that denunciation credentials have problem adjusting when they start to review and write in English, Seiniger said.
She looked for a module that would raise Tessas unchanging propagandize report and found Boise States.
Tessa gets assistance from a reading assistance during school. Seiniger believes that assistance and a preparation module are assisting Tessa make solid progress.
This module creates it excusable to spend additional time operative on your reading, she said. Thats as critical to me as a academics.
And never once has Tessa pronounced she didnt wish to go. Its always, Oh, tomorrows reading academy.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
The preparation module serves kids with a operation of abilities. The summer module mostly attracts relatives of students with Down syndrome and autism, among other issues.
Half of a kids we taught were there since they indispensable additional help, Nicholson said. The others were there since they only like to write.
One of Hannah Shorthouses friends in a academy is reading several grades above her level.
But theres no competition, pronounced Debbie Shorthouse, recalling a carpool when a clever reader was reading aloud to her classmates.
Thanks to a academy, she said, Hannah is a some-more gentle reader, too. She has issues with her prophesy and had not been in a robe of picking adult books to review until a academy started to change her.
Now she reads aloud to her pressed dog, Kipper, Shorthouse said.
With a ratio of 3 kids for each adult, a brew of approved teachers such as Nicholson and undergraduates enrolled in BSUs training programs, a training is personalized.
If we can aim programs during a students level, it can unequivocally assistance them and skeleton them to go on, pronounced Cahill.
Thats a oppulance not always accessible in a classroom of 30 kids with varying abilities and external, design measurements of tyro reading ability.
Saturdays take divided that stress, pronounced Cahill.

Cambridge professors to assistance reshape A-levels
Cambridge has been recruited as a initial university to assistance a Government change training and training in schools.
Education Secretary Michael Gove visited a city currently as partial of his goal to get tip universities to accelerate a maths A-level curriculum and urge how it is tested.
He wants to “bridge a gap” that sees propagandize leavers ill-prepared for university studies, observant many have not mastered a required skills to make a leap.
While a university says it will not be environment examination questions, a agreement will see professors assistance figure a synopsis while pity training resources with schools and coaching teachers.
Mr Gove, vocalization during a launch of a programme today during a university’s Faculty of Maths, pronounced it is about recognising a significance of maths for a mercantile destiny of a nation.
He said: “There are lots of shining maths teachers out there, though one of a problems we have is that when a best students arrive during university they haven’t indispensably been given a best support by a character of a examination that we have and a inlet of a curriculum.
“So what we wish to do is to engage universities some-more in creation certain that training can be even improved and that students rise a most richer, some-more beguiling clarity of what arithmetic can offer.”
Prof Martin Hyland pronounced a university will support a “professional development” of teachers and yield giveaway training materials on a website, that will explain how to solve maths problems and set questions for pupils to have a go.
Sipe, Freeman vying for District 3 BOE seat
Incumbent Bibb County school board member Susan Sipe faces a Nov. 6 challenge from Republican Angela Freeman for the District 3 board seat.
Given the changes on the board and the issues facing the system — from safety to academic achievement — Sipe said the board needs stability now more than ever. Current board members Tommy Barnes, Gary Bechtel and Susan Middleton have reached their term limits and cant run again. Thelma Dillard and Jason Downey will replace Barnes and Bechtel, respectively, while Dominique Johnson and Lester Miller are vying for Middletons seat.
Sipe said she aims to keep the administration transparent and accountable.
There are so many things that are happening in our system right now. There are so many initiatives right now. I dont believe this is the time where we want four brand-new board members, she said. I have the experience. Ive been on the board for four years.
Freeman, on the other hand, said she sees a need for change in District 3. She said that districts representative needs to be willing to compromise and build relationships with other board members to make decisions in the best interests of a diverse student population. Division on the board could put Bibb County in danger of losing its accreditation, she warned.
I do not think that District 3s relationship (with the board) is a positive relationship, Freeman said. Its just basically in a stalemate. Its not that were not heard in District 3. Its that the relationship that our current representative has with the rest of the board is so fractured. I just cant imagine four more years of it.
Both Sipe and Freeman said student safety and discipline should be a priority.
School leaders should enforce safety measures already in place, Freeman said, pointing to a months-long delay in her daughters getting a school-issued ID from Central High as one example of a flaw in the system. That kind of gap, she said, makes it difficult for employees to know who actually belongs at the school.
I think Bibb County has every system necessary to succeed, Freeman said. I do not think that their systems are checked to see if theyre effective and working.
Issues such as classroom discipline also have an impact on teacher morale, said Freeman, herself a former Bibb County classroom teacher with family members who have also worked in the system.
Sipe said she is encouraged by campus Police Chief Russell Bentleys return to the school district a few weeks ago. She also said the re-implementation of random student searches, which were in place when her children attended Bibb schools about a decade ago, has been a step in the right direction.
I believe its important, and I think its necessary to keep all the students safe, she said. If students know that random searches are going to occur, theyre going to think twice about bringing that knife to school or that gun to school.
Sipe also raised concerns about dormant plans to build a new Heard Elementary, which officials have said tie into plans to put in place portfolio schools in Bibb County. Portfolio schools allow students to choose programs based on individual interests.
Sipe said she would like neighborhood students to be given priority to enroll in portfolio schools once they are put in place to encourage parental involvement, something she said is strong at Heard now.
If the students who live in that neighborhood all attend that same neighborhood school, the parents will follow, she said.
Freeman said some of the districts recent initiatives, such as the Welcome Center and Mandarin Chinese courses for some elementary school students, have been more Band-Aids to long-standing problems. Chinese can benefit some students, but school leaders first should have made sure that students were reading and writing at grade level.
Putting Mandarin Chinese in every single school when you really havent been here long enough to know if it will benefit the child, it was, in my opinion, a poor choice, Freeman said.

Why we became a teacher: there is no pursuit that’s some-more exciting
I had a opening year before we went to university where we spent a year in China, only to transport and learn Chinese though we finished adult teaching English to university students. we unequivocally enjoyed it – and that was a initial time I’d suspicion about teaching. I’d left only to knowledge being abroad, though a training was a best partial for me.
So by a time I’d was during university, training had unequivocally started to take base as an idea. we desired study for my story grade during Cambridge. we found (and still find) story greatly fascinating. we did a unequivocally opposite degree, not utterly specialising in any sold duration or area. we couldn’t suppose only holding one aspect of it serve to a ostracism of all others so we didn’t feel that doing a Phd was right for me, generally as it felt that would be utterly solitary. So, as we illusory behind before we started my degree, we went on to do a PGCE.
The recommendation we was given was that to lift on during Cambridge doing a training grade would prove that we wasn’t unequivocally critical about training though only wanted to extend my tyro days utterly as we was concerned in college-level sport. So we did my PGCE during Hull and it was a fanciful march with good multiple of speculation and advice.
I detected that training is never lifeless and we have to constantly consider on your feet. It has to be one of a many formidable jobs, for instance to compute effectively in a category full of children operative during unequivocally opposite levels. And it’s tough work doing that PGCE. I’m unequivocally blissful we did it before we had children myself. Getting there is unequivocally tough! we don’t consider we get unequivocally distant down a line before we realize that.
I got my initial pursuit here during Saffron Walden County High in 1995. It was pristine fitness that we applied, we knew zero about a propagandize and only wanted an talk for practice. The conduct of dialect Denise Thompson (who has recently retired) was only wonderful. Within an hour of being here we thought: we so wish this job. Denise was so vehement about story and creation it enquiry based, severe story – it was extraordinary what she was removing a kids doing. She was a genuine impulse and we was so propitious to get a job. This is a illusory school. Students know they are approaching to uncover resilience and be on charge and there’s a unequivocally understanding comparison government team.
I learnt to be a clergyman by fabrication really. we would observe and started by duplicating what we liked. It became some-more healthy and my colleagues have always been so supportive. The story dialect always speedy egghead risk holding so it was an sparkling place to teach.
But we didn’t conduct my work life change good enough. we was so into a school, a theme and a students though we worked too tough and flattering many burnt myself out.
I was tired and after 3 years we realised we indispensable a mangle from training so we went to Vietnam with VSO for dual years. we worked on a clergyman training programme out there, and unequivocally enjoyed it. we was vital in a tiny city and supposing unconstrained party for everybody who enjoyed giving me special hurdles such as celebration cobra blood.
Being in Vietnam gave me space for some critical thinking. we suspicion about other jobs we could do though it all came behind to teaching, we couldn’t consider of anything some-more sparkling than training and it’s only such a payoff to work with immature people. So while we was divided we done a preference to come behind to teaching.
I was propitious adequate to get my aged pursuit behind in a story dialect of Saffron Walden County High School. But this time we done certain we prioritised my work-life balance. we put down some lines in a sand. we had realised that if we don’t do that we can’t indeed keep going. You have to think, “okay that’s as many as we can pretty do”. With training there is always so many some-more we can do, it’s a pursuit we can work on endlessly, so we only have to learn that doctrine or training can pass you.
It was so good to take some time out and interestingly a Institute of Education did some investigate recommending teachers take sabbaticals each 7 years, that we consider is a good idea. It’s so tough to simulate on anything when we are in a center of so much. I’ve had dual maternity leaves given I’ve come behind to training and I’ve found we have some of my best ideas when we was out of school. A uninformed viewpoint can unequivocally assistance with creativity.
I’m so blissful we came behind to teaching, and that we came behind as a categorical scale clergyman again. I’ve never regretted it. It’s tough work training full time with dual immature children though we learn new skills in terms of potency and time management. When we initial come behind to work after maternity leave we have to have faith that it will be okay. My children go to bed soon so we do things in a evenings. The other thing we did was pierce only around a dilemma from propagandize so my children could go to a tributary school. This means we can dump them off during breakfast bar and afterwards come true to school. As a operative primogenitor those additional mins make all a difference.
Now we am partner conduct so we learn story about half a time. I’m obliged for PE and a fluent humanities dialect and traffic with some whole propagandize issues such as literacy.
One of a smashing teachers here told me about a order of three. You can’t be shining all a time, only try and be shining for one in 3 lessons. Write down a things that have incited out unequivocally good and hang them above your table to remind yourself it’s going good and remember to ask and share – people aren’t going to be judging we for that.
I consider one of a many critical things we can do as a clergyman is to take an seductiveness in pupils – a some-more we can get to know them a easier it is to teach. If they feel we are meddlesome in them as people they work many harder. But a warning that this can somehow go opposite a healthy work/life balance. Teaching is a consistent balancing act and you’ve got to keep your eye on a ball.
I also contend keep on amatory your subject. If we remove that training can turn a genuine grind. Don’t be fearful to uncover we adore your subject, don’t be fearful to suffer a lessons, don’t be fearful to acknowledge if we don’t know something – we consider lessons work best where everyone’s a learner.

Teaching Jobs Rose But Not in Great Falls
Local school districts across the country added 79,000 education
jobs from July through September. But officials from the Great Falls School District say that while they did some hiring, they did not hire for any new positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this summer’s hires were the strongest since 2006. But the Great Falls School District experienced the opposite. More teacher layoffs were implemented. But replacing retired teachers helped the number of layoffs. Human Resources Director for Great Falls Public Schools Tammy Lacey says the district added 50 jobs but they weren’t new.
“They were filling in so they’re not additional 50 teachers. They’re filling positions that were vacated do to retirement
resignations, teachers on leave,” says Lacey.
Lacey says the district has made adjustments because of the layoffs. They’ve had to increase the number of students per classroom; exceeding the number set by the state.
German teacher at Great Falls High School Dawn Reitz says having too many students in one classroom affects the students learning.
“When there’s not enough teachers and they combine classes together,” says Reitz. “We’re not able to help the students when they have questions during class because we just don’t have time.”
Property taxes are a significant component in public school funding. Tax receipts have been slowly recovering. For the second quarter of 2012, property taxes are up six percent from last year. Even with the trend in new hiring nationally, officials say it still isn’t enough to close the gap between the teacher-student ratio. Within that four year period when teaching jobs were slashed, enrollment in public schools was projected to be around 370,000. In order to keep up, schools would have had to hire 62,000 teachers. Instead, more than 300,000 workers were laid off.
Program lets students ready before tyro teaching
Three undergraduate students have been given an event to ideal their training skills before they turn central tyro teachers and after pursue their careers.
Bridging a Gap is a campus classification that collaborates with Paschal High School to assistance preparation majors build connectors and benefit real-world experience, Loren Spice, partner highbrow of mathematics, said.
“Often, these are rigidly stratified communities and we should not have expertise adult here, dictating to [undergraduate] students down below,” he said. “Then they turn teachers and nobody ever revisits these connections.”
Spice and Sarah Quebec Fuentes, partner highbrow of arithmetic education, have attempted to emanate a some-more laid-back and stretchable form of tyro teaching. Fuentes pronounced Bridging a Gap does not have any of a constructional mandate that are common in some-more normal tyro training programs.
“They unequivocally feel like it’s a good stepping mill that eases them into tyro teaching,” she said.
Senior center propagandize preparation vital Paige Rodriguez pronounced she appreciates being means to have hands-on knowledge in a classroom. The students work on doctrine skeleton and grading as good as doing some teaching.
“Basically it’s like we’re tyro training before we tyro teach,” she said. “I’ve also schooled a lot of practice with a students, training how to conflict to certain situations that start in a classroom.”
Although Rodriguez has not taught an tangible doctrine yet, comparison arithmetic vital Doug McDougal pronounced for him, training and interacting with a students has been one of a many sparkling tasks.
“[Students are] unequivocally receptive in carrying another instructor in a course,” he said. “And carrying someone else to travel around a room and assistance them know a topics, they’ve shown zero though honour for me.”
Throughout a semester-long program, participants are compulsory to be benefaction on a high propagandize campus for during slightest 5 hours a week, Fuentes said.
For Rodriguez and McDougal, Bridging a Gap is a useful event that will beam them in their future.
“Teaching has always been a dream,” McDougal said. “And this has already done me some-more confident, and has reasserted my beliefs that we wish to be a teacher.”
America Has Hundreds Of Thousands Fewer Teachers Than It Had Three Years …
The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced this morning that the United States economy added 163,000 jobs in July, a positive if not large enough step in the nation’s economic recovery. But while the private sector continues to add jobs, federal, state, and local governments continue to shed them. The public sector lost 9,000 more jobs in July, bringing its total cuts to 648,000 over the last three years — the worst three-year period on record.
The Hamilton Project examined government data and found that among those public sector cuts, teachers, police officers, and emergency first responders have been hit especially hard. From 2009 to 2011, the country lost 220,000 teaching jobs, and the number of emergency responders dropped by more than 40 percent, as the chart below shows:

The Hamilton Project’s data came from the Current Population Survey and measured through 2011. As ThinkProgress reported in July, BLS data show that the economy shed 130,000 teaching jobs in the year spanning June 2011 to June 2012, meaning the actual number of vanished teaching jobs is likely higher than the one found by the Hamilton Project.
While the government typically adds jobs during recessions to bolster economic recoveries, it has not done so this time. This hurts the economy in the short-term — the nation’s unemployment rate would be a full point lower without the public sector cuts — but it also has perilous consequences for the future. The lack of teachers will only exacerbate the nation’s growing education gap between rich and poor, which contributes to a cycle of inequality that is jeopardizing the nation’s middle class.
Worse yet, the problem created by these job losses is unnecessary. Republicans’ “completely misguided” pursuit of deficit reduction at all costs, even as the nation’s borrowing costs reach record lows, has prevented the government from making the investments it needs to protect the jobs of teachers, police officers, and first-responders. Those investments wouldn’t just keep teachers in the classroom and first responders on the job, but would also help improve the nation’s overall recovery.
