Udupi, 10 Apr 2013: At the present scenario, majority of medical students who pass out of Ayurveda Colleges are opting teaching jobs. Besides, those who pursue career in teching are signing long term contract with Ayurveda Board. It’s owing to this, the numbers of Ayurveda doctors serving in related services are declining, said Dr Srinivas K Bannigol, professor of Ayurveda College, Hubli and member of CCIM, New Delhi.
Dr Srinivas was speaking after conferring state level traditional medicinal practitioners Award ‘Siri’ during the annual day celebrations of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunateswara (SDM) Ayurveda College, Udyavar, near here on Tuesday April 9.
Dr Srinivas urged the Ayurveda students to take interest in the practice, besides take up research and special study, to record rare treatment given on difficult diagnosis, advised Dr Srinivas.
The state level traditional medicinal practitioners Award ‘Siri’ was conferred on Vasappa B Badigera, traditional medicinal practitioner from Ranebennur in Haveri district at the occasion.
SDM Ayurveda College principal Dr U N Prasad presided the programme.Poornaprajna College principal Professor Sadashiv Rao was the chief guest of the occasion.
The student welfare officer Dr B R Doddamani was present at the dais.The students’ council president Dr Nagaraj G Bhat welcomed the gathering. The vice principal Dr K R Ramachandra College presented the annual report. The students’ council vice president Chaitra and secretary Sayyed R Tabish compered the programme.

Four women allegedly used same name and certificates to land teaching jobs
Allahabad: Alarmed by the discovery that at least four women had been appointed as teachers in various districts of Uttar Pradesh using the same name and set of certificates, Allahabad High Court has ordered filing of a case and asked the Crime Branch of CID to probe the case.
Noting that “fraudulent appointments” of as many as four women in the name of “Poonam Pandey” was a “scam” by the Department of Basic Education, Justice Vikram Nath ordered on March 12 that the CB CID shall submit its report of the investigation on March 20.
“It is a case of clear-cut fraud, cheating, manipulation and misrepresentation”, the court remarked, adding “it not only involves offence committed by four women but by their relatives and the officials of Basic Education Department and its allied Directorate”.
“Considering the fact that all the women imposing as Poonam Pandey are married, they would not be arrested till conclusion of the investigation on the condition that they will extend full cooperation to the investigation agency,” the court said.
However, the court made it clear “in case investigating agency finds that there is any hindrance or non-cooperation by the women or their relatives, it would be open to the agency to apply before this court for withdrawing this order of stay of their arrest”.
The irregularities came to light in course of hearing on a petition filed by one of the women employed in the name of “Poonam Pandey” who turned out to be Poonam Mishra, a resident of Siddharthnagar district.
On February 6, 2013, the court had directed the then Circle Officer of Bansi in Siddharthnagar to probe the matter and submit a report.
The Circle Officer’s report disclosed that “using one set of certificates of a genuine teacher, other women alleging themselves to be the same person have obtained appointments in different institutions in different districts” and that “there could be several other similar fraudulent appointments”.

450 additional primary teaching jobs next year
Addressing the INTO’s annual conference in Cork today, Minister for Education and Skills Mr. Ruraí Quinn reitereated the government’s budget commitment to preserve the standard pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) in primary schools, with the addition of 450 teaching posts in the year ahead:
“Next year, as a result of increasing demographics, and the continued preservation of the standard pupil-teacher ratio in primary schools, up to 450 additional teaching posts will be created in the primary sector”.
Minister Quinn added that “It is a measure of how the teaching profession is respected in Irish society, that we will continue recruiting extra teachers, while the numbers in other sectors are frozen, or even falling”.

Education Recruitment Day is in its 38th year and aims to connect students and alumni with career opportunities in the education field. This year, 44 employers from 11 states will be looking to recruit, Becky Faber, assistant director of Career Services and organizer of the fair, said.
Faber said she expects about 300 to 350 attendees. To stand out in the crowd, Faber emphasized the importance of students coming prepared with several copies of their resumes as well as a pen and notepad to take notes while talking with recruiters.
“I also encourage students to expand the list of schools with which they plan to make contact,” Faber said. “There is a great deal to learn about teaching in different districts by talking with recruiters from varying parts of the country.”
Karen Kassebaum, director of recruitment for the College of Education Human Sciences, said it’s important to make a good first impression. Students should bring business cards and dress professionally, she said. Having a “30-second elevator speech and meaningful questions” prepared will also help applicants stand out, she said.
Past students have enjoyed the set up of the education career fair, Kassebaum said.
“They have said things like, ‘I love making that first impression in a not-so-stressful environment,’” she said.
Kassebaum also said the convenience of the career fair is beneficial for students. The interviews are on-site and students can stop by when it best fits in their schedules.
Underclassmen are invited to attend the career fair as well.
“We always encourage education students who have not yet student taught to come to see how an education job fair functions,” Faber said.
Kassebaum said she sees the event as an opportunity for younger education students “to see what future positions might be on the horizon.” Kassebaum hopes underclassmen will recognize the diversity of schools and districts.
The event will be beneficial for recruiters as well, she said.
“Education Recruitment Day provides an opportunity for school districts to recruit exceptional teachers and individuals from a prestigious Big Ten institution,” Kassebaum said.

Hamilton School District officials cut 11 teaching jobs
Thursday evening Hamilton School District officials voted to not fill 11 teaching positions.
School board members held a special meeting Thursday regarding job cuts, where the public voiced their concerns over how cuts could impact education.
Most of the folks who got up to speak urged the school board to postpone the teacher reduction. They asked for the board to wait and find out if state dollars would be available to offset costs.
Administrators tell us the cuts are necessary to offset an anticipated $371,000 deficit.
School officials said they don’t believe they will see significant funding increases and they have other budget issues to consider like tenure teacher salaries.
“This isn’t something that is just this year, this has been done before. We had 29 of them two years ago,” said board member Jim Shea.
Hamilton resident and mother Angie Poliquin stood up a handful of times to voice her concerns about the teacher cuts. She explained to board members that her son has Down syndrome and she feels eliminating so many para-professionals would have detrimental impacts on her son.
“The school district is his last best hope at getting to be a self-supporting, contributing member of society when he’s an adult and I really want to see that happen for him,” said Poliquin. “I’m afraid pulling resources where they’re desperately needed and experienced teachers from where they’re proven is a mistake.”
The 11 positions which will not be filled are:
-6 para-professionals
-2 teachers
-1 preschool specialist
-1 art specialist
-1 grant writer

Terrell, Young face loss of teaching jobs
PARKERSBURG – Two teachers who were suspended by school officials this year may find themselves out of the Wood County classrooms permanently next year.
Embattled Parkersburg High School teachers Amanda Terrell and Jesse Young were not on the list Tuesday evening to receive probationary and continuing contracts for personnel in Wood County Schools.
Terrell was suspended by officials earlier this year following the “Bad Kid Fort” incident. Young was suspended recently for his role in the PHS Harlem Shake video.

Greg Merritt, president of the Wood County American Federation of Teachers, spoke during public comments at the Wood County Board of Education meeting to bring attention to Terrell’s omission. He noted Terrell, who’s taught in the system for two years, has not been included in the continuing contracts for next year.
Merritt said Terrell served her suspension and returned to the classroom. He acknowledged she made a mistake with regard to the “Bad Kid Fort” incident, but has continued to teach.
Merritt described the social media campaign against Terrell, following the incident, as “ruthless and exaggerated.” He asked the board to consider placing Terrell’s name on the list for continuing contracts.
Terrell attended Tuesday’s meeting, but did not address the board of education. She left before the meeting ended.
Merritt said Terrell was unaware of her contract status until she noticed her name had been omitted from the agenda.
The issue was questioned by board president Tim Yeater.
“She served her suspension, and there were no issues after the fact?” he asked Superintendent Pat Law. “Can you explain?”
“Not here,” Law said.
“Terrell won’t be notified until after (tonight),” Yeater followed. “We take action without her knowledge?”
Law said Terrell would be able to respond by requesting a hearing. She has a right to a hearing afterward, he said.
Sue Woodward, assistant superintendent of Wood County Schools, said after the meeting teachers lacking tenure have to prove why they should be rehired.
“After three years it’s our burden to prove why they shouldn’t be hired,” she said. “That’s the way the system works.”
Merritt imagined Terrell would request a hearing.
“I would encourage her to do that,” he added.
Board members voted to approve the personnel matters by a 4-1 vote. Yeater was the lone no vote. He said his vote was not because of the names on the list, “but the ones left off.”
Yeater said he had additional comments, but would refrain.
Young, a first-year teacher, also was not extended a contract according to the personnel addendum. In fact, board members unanimously – and without discussion- voted to extend his suspension to 30 days.
Board members voted down the proposed early transfer of Christie Willis, principal at Jefferson Elementary Center, to become assistant director of federal programs. The change had sought to go into effect April 1, but board members and several school officials balked at the early change, preferring to maintain the initial July 1 date.
Officials noted Willis was “not bailing on the school.” The earlier date was requested by John Merritt, the federal programs director, who needed help preparing for summer programs.
Karen Brunicardi, director of elementary schools and prekindergarten programs, told the board in the “best interest of the school I would like her to finish the year.”
The board declined to approve the early transfer, voting it down by a 1-4 vote. Fox was the only affirmative vote.

CLARKSBURG — As job opportunities in health care fields continue to rapidly increase, college professors are needed to train the expanding work force.
But college administrators still have to fight budgetary battles before they can hire more faculty as class sizes grow.
Jobs for college professors in health specialties are expected to grow faster than other professions in North Central West Virginia through the year 2020, according to a report from WorkForce West Virginia.
WorkForce West Virginia’s labor market projection includes health specialties such as dentistry, laboratory technology, medicine, pharmacy, public health, therapy and veterinary science, according to employment programs specialist Joe Jarvis.
At Pierpont Community Technical College, teaching jobs in health specialties tend to open up with the addition of new departments or the retirements of current instructors, according to Dr. Rosemarie Romesburg, dean of the School of Health Careers.
“As we add new programs, we of course have to add new faculty,” she said.
The School of Health Careers offers certificate and associate degree programs in a variety of fields.
With more people interested in those health programs, the school added an anatomy and physiology instructor about two years ago to help students prepare for more advanced required courses, according to Romesburg.
The addition of the respiratory therapy program about four to five years ago also brought the need for specialized faculty members, Romesburg said.
Most recently, the addition of a licensed practical nursing program in Braxton County created a full-time faculty position and a couple of spots for adjunct faculty.
While the increase in college teaching jobs hasn’t been dramatic, it has been steady, according to Romesburg.
