Local Superintendent Taking On Extra Teaching Jobs
Local Superintendent Taking On Extra Teaching Jobs
By: Robert Price
This semester the superintendent of a local school district may have two extra teaching jobs on the side.
The superintendent of the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD could soon be lending his expertise to students at two area universities. This after the board of trustees unanimously approved his request to teach in an adjunct capacity at both the University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas AM University – San Antonio.
Dr. Greg Gibson has been superintendent of the district since January 2010, and soon after began teaching a graduate level finance class at UTSA. Every semester since, his contract with the district has required board approval before he can sign back on.
The UTSA class he teaches meets three Thursdays a month, but now his Saturdays and Sundays could soon be full as well, if another teaching job with Texas AM University – San Antonio pans out. In this case, Dr. Gibson says he’d be helping the university design and develop a class.
In addition to his regular duties as superintendent, it’s all sure to keep him pretty busy. But he says he’s not being stretched too thin…and it’s not about the money.
“I guess it’s I have passion about it because I believe that we’re under-preparing administrators for the reality of this job,” said Dr. Greg Gibson. “And so I’m passionate about trying to make sure that the universities’ programs help prepare them in the way they need to be prepared. And I view it as a positive that these universities are asking me to coordinate with them, to help develop these programs.”
Dr. Gibson let the board know the AM job may not materialize this semester, but he says if it does, in the name of transparency, he wanted to let them know there’s a chance he will get paid for his work. However, he says he’d help them regardless of whether or not he gets paid.
