Recent studies by the European Commission as well as research agency Eurostat show that numerous countries across Europe are on the brink of facing an education crisis, with countries like the UK, Germany, and Italy beginning to experience a shortage of teachers. However, the UK appears to be hit hardest by this crisis, with the country garnering a pupil-to-teacher ratio of 19.9, a figure that is well above the 14.5 average of other EU member countries. The study also shows that only two per cent of the UK’s top graduates are currently opting to train as teachers, and experts predict that this will only worsen this year’s slump in the number of applicants to teaching jobs. UK statistics, however, show that a majority of final-year students (80%) consider teaching to be a high-status career choice, indicating that students’ desire to enter the profession is still high. So why is the country suffering from a shortage of eligible teaching professionals?

Tradewind and other recruitment agencies attribute the dwindling numbers of teaching applicants to recent changes to regulations concerning degree requirements and state funding for trainees. New regulations now require a minimum of lower second-class degrees for teacher training applicants, while current bursary schemes focus on giving higher incentives to first-class degree holders training for subjects suffering the worst shortages. These rules have deterred graduates with third-class degrees from applying and reduced the number of trainees for non-prioritised secondary specialisms which attract no bursary at all. These are said to contribute to today’s shortage of teachers.

However, premier UK teaching agencies such as Tradewind reassures schools and teachers that there is no need to panic. The company boasts of a large database of teaching professionals, inviting schools to search through their selection of “A Grade” candidates whose credentials are available on the company’s website.

Representatives of the company guarantee prospective employers of the quality of their candidates, saying, “Whatever your staffing requirements, you can always be assured that anyone you employ from Tradewind have met the strictest requirements of the DfE Quality Mark. All our candidates are assessed for their behaviour management strategy, knowledge of the UK national curriculum, and ability to work as a Tradewind supply teacher.”

The company also prides itself in its commitment to its staff, offering services to improve teaching performance as well as help applicants find teaching jobs that make use of their capabilities best:

“We offer exciting training courses that will benefit aspiring teachers both personally and professionally. All of our courses are also free of charge. We have a free Resource Centre with Internet access for all our candidates and dedicated consultants that can help teachers find the ideal role.”
